Mr. Crigler, a native Charlottean, died June 12, 2017 at home.
Born Dec.24,l927, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John Fielding Crigler, Benner graduated from Central High School where he was an All-City and All-State basketball player. He attended Duke University where he played Freshmen basketball. In 1946 he enlisted in the Army Air Force, and then returned to Duke where he graduated in 1950. Born Dec.24,l927, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John Fielding Crigler, Benner graduated from Central High School where he was an All-City and All-State basketball player. He attended Duke University where he played Freshmen basketball. In 1946 he enlisted in the Army Air Force, and then returned to Duke where he graduated in 1950. After being employed by M & R Labratories of Columbus, Ohio, Benner joined The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S.in 1953, becoming District Manager in 1956. In 1976 Mr. Crigler was appointed Agency Manager in Charlotte. The Crigler Agency, which covered North Carolina from Asheville to Raleigh, won 2 President Trophies, which were awarded to the top ten Agencies in the country. The Agency won the GAMA Management award each year.
Active in many industry organizations, locally & nationally, Mr. Crigler was a qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table, Director of the Charlotte CLU Chapter, Charlotte Estate Planning, and the Charlotte GAMA Assoc., serving a term as president.

He was a Founding member of Christ Lutheran Church, serving terms on the Church Council, and many years on the Stewardship Committee. He was a member of the Founders Society of Duke University, the Iron Dukes, past president of the Charlotte Duke Alumni Club, the Mint Museum, past president of the Charlotte Kappa Alpha Alumni Assoc., Good Fellows, Lions Club, and Quail Hollow Club, serving several terms on the board.

Mr. Criglers' greatest joy was his service to the YMCA. He served on the YMCA of Greater Charlotte board, and was elected a Trustee of the board in 1992. He received the George Williams Award for service in 1996.

He served as Chairman of the Harris Family YMCA from its inception in 1977 to 1983, securing the land from the late James J. Harris, and overseeing the first building. In 2008 a giving society at the Harris Y was named in his honor, The Crigler Society.

Mr. Crigler is survived by his wife of 65 years, Trudie Leonard Crigler, 4 sons: B and wife Carol, Robert & wife Catherine, John & wife Beth all of Charlotte, and David & wife Beth of Greenville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, Phillip & wife Gen, Kevin & wife Kelli, Hannah, Hayden, Catherine, Mary Leonard, and Walker of Charlotte; Alex & wife Ellis, Carmen & husband Will Feemster, Ginny and husband Geoff Schneider of Greenville. Great-grandchildren, Kevin, Jr., Candace of Charlotte, "Bo", Mary Ellis & Reed Crigler, Annie Knox, Jay, and Eleanor Feemster and Geoffrey Schneider of Greenville, SC. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. John Fielding Crigler, Jr. of Needham, Mass, sister-in-law, Emilie Frantz Crigler of Charlotte, and many nieces & nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the kind and compassionate care provided by caregivers Anetra Chisholm, Keisha Chisholm, and Wednesday Fair as well as the physicians at Novant Health Hallmark Care.

Memorial Service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 4519 Providence Rd., Charlotte on June 15 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Scott Suskovic officiating.
